Which Boris, as Prime Minister ?

Which Boris Johnson, as Prime Minister?

Britain's ruling Conservative Party has elected Boris Johnson as the new leader, winning the race by a margin of 66% of the 159,320 Party members eligible to vote and to follow Theresa May as next Prime Minister of United Kingdom.

In his acceptance speech he said: "no one person or party has the monopoly of wisdom .The best instinct and the best way of balancing instincts, to own your own home, keep your own money, and share your values, is what I stand for. I have three priorities, deliver, unite and defeat.

Which Boris will it be; the gaff ridden former Foreign Minister, or will he as a former Mayor of London (2008-16) preach the virtues of immigration,or as Brexit Bojo of the "Leave Campaign"or will he go ahead with a "No Deal" and exit Europe on 31 October 2019, or will he be looked upon with a mix of amusement and contempt for joking that "women in burkas, look little like letterboxes."

As leader of the largest party in UK Parliament, Johnson will be invited by H. M. The Queen on Wednesday 24 July 2019 to form a government, and be the first American born Prime Minister of United Kingdom.

Boris is a flflamboyant politician, with a "Can do" philosophy, holding a slim majority in Parliament and called to govern with the threat of a General Election hanging over his head, even though one is not scheduled until 2022.

How can Sri Lanka do away with its dated identity?

Out dated identity?

We all feel anger, frustration, resentment and many other unwanted feelings especially since the Easter tragedy in our land.

We now see in the media daily about the financial problems people face.People without jobs, people losing jobs,  government trying all forms of incentives to promote confidence, tourism and trade.Perhaps, a lot negative, contracting and depressing. This is creating the problem to deepen, even further.

We are all now waiting for a miracle, at the forthcoming Presidential election to get us out of trouble and put us back on the road to recovery. A tall order.

Our mind seeks a planned, preferred routine, to bring back order out of chaos, so that when outside events seem uncertain, we feel less  threatened, insecure and fearful.

No leader can bring about a change; that change must begin, first in our own minds.

How to let life be?

"Where will we go, this is our home?" This is the cry not only in America today, but also in Sri Lanka?

Consider the political crisis brewing in Sri Lanka and the urgency to find a way out to arrest the situation. This is the search taking place. It is on top of our minds.

As Winston Churchill said years ago: " An optimist sees the opportunity in every difficulty."

To avoid the stress associated with our hard times, we need to have a fresh mind set. We can simply take the ball that has been thrown our way and run with it, or we can sit and do nothing but worry about it. The problem remains with us.

Meditation

If we need to observe, before we judge, we open ourselves to possibilities. We acknowledge that our opinion, is not a fact. "When we judge someone,it affects us more than the other person. It says more about us,than the other person. We convey how we perceive the world. It shows the preconception of our mind?"

Instead of judgment, observation and being curious, we should seek more information. We need to expand the gap between observation and conclusion.

It is not about whether we are right or wrong.Instead our perception has become our reality.

When we embrace the difference between "us and them," maybe they don't see what we see? Maybe they don't want to see what we see? Maybe they don't want the same things as us? Maybe they have a different life philosophy and value life differently?

I think you already know what I mean, I think you already know the answer.

If, however, you don't know the answer, then when we visit our Temples we may be able to seek the answer?

The answer is mediation and mindfulness?

We will clearly see the answer, when we detach ourselves from our judgments. We then take a step beyond and give someone the benefit of the doubt, not because we want to be charitable, but for our self satisfaction and our own peace of mind.

Another way to build confidence

Besides, exercise of our mind, we need vigourous exercise of our body? In my opinion, people necessarily, don't need medicine against stress, if they would do physical exercise. Synchronicity of mind and body is by supplying our brain with oxygen and releasing endorphins, which in turn helps us find ourselves naturally confident.

Whether being a vegetarian or a vegan,is not as important, what quantity, quality,we put in our bodies that builds our body mass index?

Physical exercise helps to overcome uncertainty, with the built in trust in our own abilities. This is what Ayurveda is all about. This is what our sages preached and professed from ancient times. When we become active participants in the game of life with positive thinking,we generally are able to welcome uncertainty as we know that something even better is awaiting to be unraveled.

What then is the paradox of our outdated identity?

Our outdated identity is that we have got used to thinking far too into the future rather than "living life in the here and now," "living life in the moment". This is important as it helps in times of continuous turbulence and unrelenting change. When we live in the moment and train our mind to focus on the present, we become more secure. It is generally true that we are perfectly well equipped to deal with the present moment. But when our mind wanders into "uncertain and uncharted territory" of the future, we become unsure of ourselves, worried and "lose our cool," we forfeit our inner peace and tranquility.

That does not mean we should abandon a plan for our future. That does not mean we don't have a vision, a dream. Rather,we focus on the present, but have sight of our future. It is to regain our balance, "our Middle Path" which is part of our heritage. Let us stop judging life, but let it flow.

Whoever who becomes our next President has a duty to maintain this balance,
this "Middle Path," and show that he has the ability and command confidence of all, if not the large majority of the people of Sri Lanka, to deliver on his promises, to change our "inferiority mind set," by strong leadership, duty, dignity and discipline.

Deserts in North & East Sri Lanka in 30 years

Deserts can be anticipated in North and East of Sri Lanka in 30 years

"Disaster Management Minister Ranjith Madduma Bandara said yesterday the prevalent drought condition had affected a half million people in 17 districts, according a report in Daily Mirror, Sri Lanka 9 July 2019.
“Monsoon rains failed this time triggering a drought. This can be attributed to global warming. Mannar, Jaffna, Batticaloa and Puttalam are the worst hit districts. Action has been taken to supply drinking water to those in affected areas,” he said.
Tamils for Ecology Action, a organisation formed by a group of individuals in UK recently, has stated that if we in Sri Lanka continue to follow the path of inaction or even ignore the current drought conditions in the North and East, we can experience unprecedental level of disruption of our way of life and the cultural habitat of our peoples within our lifetimes.

We face severe drought and extreme weather in both Provinces. Crop failure and poverty is the order of the day.

Tamils for Ecology Action have made three demands:

1. The Government of Sri Lanka must declare a climate and ecological emergency in
the North and the East ,working with local bodies and civil institutions to
communicate the urgency for change and provide additional assistance
   immediately.

2. The Government of Sri Lanka must act now to provide more information to the
public on what action is being undertaken to ameliorate the adverse weather for
the farmers and stakeholders, by providing drinking water and other facilities.

3. Tamils for Ecology Action is appealing to all interested parties to bring this matter
to the attention of UN, Governments, international organisations and  charitable
bodies to monitor the situation and provide the necessary immediate assistance.

THE TIME FOR DENIAL IS OVER, IT IS TIME TO ACT.

Unbelievable,England win its first Cricket World Cup

Never in the history of World Cup Cricket was there such excitement, such a finish, such rivalry with a super-over drama as decider of the result of an international tournament.

England beat New Zealand in a stunning World Cup Cricket match at Lords, the home of cricket, after been drawn with 241 runs all out against New Zealand's 241 for 8 wickets,in the 50 over competition, on Sunday 14 July 2019.

England won the match and the Cup in an astonishing victory tie breaker 6 ball Super Over. The number of boundaries scored by England against their opponents was the decider.    No one would ever have imagined  such a way to win, but it went by the rule book.

Cricket saw England runners up three times before in 1979,1987 and 1992 World Cricket Cup matches, so this result was like like the underdog snatching victory from the jaws of defeat.

It was a hard fought game in a tough wicket at the home of cricket for England's opponents, New Zealand.

It was equally hard for England as there was a lot of preparation by England Main Coach Trevor Bayliss,an Australian by descent and his assistant,Paul Farbrace of England and England Manager Andrew Strauss and even the Groundsman as well as many, many others on and off the scene, including an incredible amount of hard work and even fingers crossed till the last minute, both by the teams and the spectators.

Ben Stokes, the All Rounder was the player of the match, while West Indian young bowler, not heard of much before turned the game around with his spectacular tactics in bowling in the decider Super Over.

What was it like for me?

The last time I had witnessed such a nail biting, thrilling end to a competition was in the summer of 1966 with England winning the World Cup Football at Wembley. I could not get a ticket to watch the game, but like this time, I watched the revealing result as i was glued to the TV.

I transported my mind to the last minute of that match,I found a similarity of purpose,an endearing excitement, an unpreparedness of the result, which for me as a Sri Lankan just arrived in UK was really unbelievable.

We Sri Lankans generally anticipate a result and blow hot and cold, have a celebration before a result of a game and often get very disappointed by the outcome.

In sharp contrast the English remain cool, calm and collected till after the result and go bonkers after the outcome. That is a tradition,I never knew nor expect, as I was
a "green horn" in England. However, after 53 years life in England, I felt there was going to be an unpredictable result, taking account of the character of the people, rather the players in England. I was not far wrong?

Cricket, lovely cricket as  Harry Bellafonte intoned ?

We all know that Australia and New Zealand have always had a great rivalry, not only in cricket, also in their All Blacks Rugby and perhaps in sheep sharing?

Australia beat New Zealand in the last World Cup in 2015.

New Zealand wanted to prove a point in the ICC World Cup tournament in 2019 in England,by beating England in England.

New Zealand were confident, for me and many others seemed a better side at the start of the Final, as well as during the game. But like many Commonwealth citizens, we make the mistake of under rating the English and their ability to claim victory from the jaws of defeat.

What New Zealand lacked in winning the current 2019 competition, they made up by being as cool, calm and civilized, which showed the traits not only of the game, but also of "being New Zealand", a hallmark of duty, dignity and discipline.

The ICC Cricket World Cup dates back to 1977.

The next World Cup Cricket competition will be held in India in 2023.

What it will be like is what Cricket was and is a sport of gentlemen, irrespective of where and when it is played.
